Amazon’s 2024 sustainability report: What freight partners need to know

Six years into The Climate Pledge, the Amazon sustainability report describes how we’re building a more sustainable company for our partners, our people, and our planet.

Each year, we showcase our progress in becoming a more sustainable company through the release of our annual Amazon Sustainability Report. As we work toward our goal of reaching net-zero carbon by 2040, decarbonising our freight network remains a key priority.

Here are the highlights from this year’s report for our freight customers.

Scaling carbon-free energy through investments in wind and solar

Amazon continually invests in new solutions to decarbonise our business as part of our Climate Pledge commitment. This includes implementing efficiency initiatives, using lower-emission fuels, investing in carbon-free energy, supporting suppliers to implement emissions reduction strategies, and investing in carbon neutralisation projects.

In 2019, we set a goal to match 100% of the electricity used across our global operations—with 100% renewable energy by 2030. Our logistics sustainability report shows that, in 2024, we met this goal for the second consecutive year, five years ahead of our original target of 2030.

Lowering our carbon intensity amid a year of business growth

Regular and transparent reporting is an important part of our decarbonisation strategy.

After two years of decreasing absolute carbon emissions, we saw a six percent increase in 2024. At the same time, we achieved a four percent reduction in carbon intensity compared to 2023, with 11% business growth during the same period.

As we continue towards our 2040 goal, our progress will not always be linear, but we remain focused on investing in long-term solutions, helping our supply chain decarbonise, and innovating with our partners in the hard-to-abate parts of our business.

Electrifying the middle mile ecosystem

We are continuing to increase the usage of middle mile electric vehicles (EVs) that move shipments between Amazon facilities. In early 2025, we announced our largest order of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs), with more than 200 new Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros 600 vehicles joining our transportation network in Europe.

These vehicles are expected to transport 338 million packages per year once fully operational. We expect these vehicles to join the 300 middle mile EVs deployed in our transportation network by the end of 2025 in the UK and by 2026 in Germany.

Increasing use of lower-carbon fuels and alternative-fuel vehicles

Electrification is our primary strategy for decarbonising logistics and transportation network vehicles. Where electrification is not yet feasible, we are scaling and encouraging the use of lower-carbon fuels, focusing on road transportation in the short term and ocean transportation and aviation over the long term.

In 2024 alone, we used 4.7 million gallons of renewable diesel, up significantly from 286,300 gallons the year before. We also procured 3.7 million gallons of blended sustainable aviation fuel and sourced biofuel services for more than 10% of our ocean cargo. These actions help lower the carbon footprint of long-distance shipments without disrupting reliability or speed.

Enhancing routing and fleet efficiency

Optimal routing and transportation network efficiency is one of the most impactful ways of reducing emissions. As seen in our sustainable transport report, we are actively prioritising lower-emission transportation options by expanding multi-modal road, rail, sea, and air options for our freight customers.

In 2024, 90% of our imported transoceanic shipments were transported via ocean freight and 10% transported via airfreight, consistent with 2023. We also increased our total rail load volume by 59% in Europe compared to 2023.

For example, Amazon launched rail deliveries in the UK for the first time in 2024. More than 5 million products are expected to travel on the UK’s electric rail network in 2025, avoiding traffic congestion and reducing carbon emissions, with plans to expand across further electric rail routes before the end of 2025.

Accelerating decarbonisation beyond our own business

We recognise that addressing complex sustainability challenges—like enabling widespread electrification and scaling lower-carbon fuels—requires growing demand to expand supply and achieve lower costs through efficiencies of scale.

We are driving change through industry engagement and buyers’ alliances like Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) and the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA), which help develop lower-carbon solutions for hard-to-abate sectors and commodities.

Our partnerships with organisations such as the Smart Freight also support innovation and decarbonisation across the freight industry. This work extends through The Climate Pledge, which reached 549 signatories by the end of 2024. Last year, the fund also made 12 new and follow-on investments across transportation, energy, buildings, and carbon removal sectors.

Working safely with our operations partners
For long-haul transportation, we’ve made investments in safety through our Relay technology, which carriers use to book and execute work for Amazon. This includes implementing stringent driver ID verification for every load to ensure we know exactly who is handling our shipments.

We’ve also enhanced our safety guidance and trip planning features that provide drivers with route-specific weather forecasts, in-app alerts, and satellite imagery for safe navigation. Additionally, we’ve improved our fleet of more than 50,000 branded trailers by adding flashing auxiliary lamps and reflective tape to ensure trailers are more visible to help drivers on the road maintain a safe distance.

Looking ahead

As we look to the future, we’re not slowing down. Already in 2025, we’ve made significant strides, including plans to invest more than €1 billion to further electrify and decarbonise operations across Europe. While there is still more to be done, our freight customers can feel confident that, when they partner with us, they’re working with a freight provider that’s pioneering a more sustainable future.
